We started with billing because shop owners in Tamil Nadu were using software written in a language their staff didn't speak, on the assumption that the internet always works.
Kaasa rests on one idea. Speech is the interface most Indian shops already use. The software should meet them there.

Offline first
A shop bills whether or not the internet is up. Every bill in Kaasa is saved on the phone before anything else happens. Offline is a normal state, not an error.
Tamil first
Kaasa speaks Tamil and English, including both mixed in one sentence, because that is how people actually talk at a counter.
Money is never a float
Every rupee in Kaasa is a decimal, rounded once at a documented boundary. Ledgers are append-only. A wrong number is worse than a missing feature.
Data stays in India
Shop data is stored on servers in India. Consent is recorded, retention is set by the customer, and a named grievance officer answers.
The app is dumb on purpose
Prices, tax rates, languages and providers live on the server. We can reprice a plan or swap a speech provider without shipping an APK.
Small, and reachable
If something breaks in your shop, you talk to the people who wrote the code. Same day.
